Mary Wittenberg joined New York Road Runner in 1998 and became its Chief Operating Officer (COO) in 2000. Following the retirement of Allan Steinfeld in 2005, she assumed the position of President and CEO, as well as Race Director of the New York City Marathon. Under her leadership, she professionalized New York Road Runners and grew participation in the New York City Marathon. Other highlights of her tenure as President/CEO include overseeing the 2008 US Men's Marathon Olympic Trials, securing ING as a title sponsor to the New York City Marathon, and co-founding the Abbott World Marathon Majors in 2006. Wittenberg is currently CEO of Virgin Sport.

Alice Schneider was one of the first full-time employees of New York Road Runners and a pioneer in computerized race scoring, timing and registration. She began volunteering at races in the 1970s and was eventually hired by Fred Lebow as Director of Computer Operations. Schneider "developed the software and systems that allowed NYRR to register, time, and score thousands of runners in the New York City Marathon and other events" (Alice Schneider, Road Race Industry Pioneer). She was married to former NYRR President Allan Steinfeld. Schneider retired from NYRR in 2004 and died on September 24, 2016.

Peter Ciaccia, NYRR’s President, Events and TCS New York City Marathon Race Director, has been a key player at NYRR for the past 15 years. Under his leadership, NYRR’s impact in each of the city’s boroughs has deepened with the development of free community-based runs and walks and the creation of more opportunities for the inclusion of young runners in the calendar of NYRR races.

Ciaccia has been instrumental in the redesign and production of NYRR’s events, with a focus on raising the logistical integrity and overall race-day experience. Under his guidance, NYRR’s signature events, including the United Airlines NYC Half and the Airbnb Brooklyn Half, have grown significantly, and the TCS New York City Marathon has become the most popular and largest marathon in the world, broadcast live nationally on ABC/ESPN and in 21 countries with close to one billion households around the globe. As Race Director, Ciaccia oversees the recruitment of all professional athletes in NYRR’s major races, and is actively directing a “Clean Sport” educational initiative to address the issues of doping in the sport.

Ciaccia, who previously held the titles of Chief Production Officer and Technical Director of the TCS New York City Marathon, now oversees areas including Event Development and Production, Broadcasting, Media Relations and Public Affairs, Professional Athletes, Volunteer and Community Engagement, Youth Events, and the Athletes with Disabilities programs.

Prior to joining NYRR, Ciaccia held executive positions in the music industry for CBS Records, Inc., and Sony Music Entertainment. For 10 years, Ciaccia was the owner, president, and CEO of PC Management, Inc., a firm that specialized in artist development and international touring.

Ciaccia maintains close working relationships with city, state, and federal officials on all matters pertaining to NYRR event planning. He holds certifications in FEMA and ICS planning, and is a certified USAT Race Director and USATF official. He is a member of the Advisory Board for the National Center for Spectator Sports Security, and was instrumental in developing the safety and security council for marathoning and road racing in the United States. Ciaccia was a key contributor to NYRR being awarded the SBJ Sports Event of the Year for the 2010 New York City Marathon and was featured in the SBJ Game Day profile “A Day In The Life." He was named one of New York City’s “Responsible 100” and one of Runner’s World’s “50 Most Influential People in Running."

Ciaccia was raised in the Bronx and attended the City University of New York-Herbert H. Lehman College, where he received a degree in musicology and education and was awarded the Charles H. Hughes Award for Theory and Musicology. He also has an SCPS Certification in Sports, Entertainment & Events Marketing from New York University. Ciaccia has a lifetime passion for fitness; he has completed numerous half-marathons and ultramarathons all over the world.

The New York Road Runners Club Library was established in [1981] and renamed the Albert H. Gordon Library in 1983. Its Chief Librarian was Mimi Fahnestock. The library collected books, periodicals, audiovisual material, newspaper clippings, and race programs related to New York Road Runners, the New York City Marathon, prominent runners, and broader topics of running and long-distance road racing.

Ann Wells Crandell served as Executive Vice President of Business Development and Marketing Strategy from 2001-2012.

Lea Tiernan currently serves as Director of the Business Development and Strategic Partnerships Department.

Bari Greenfield joined NYRR in 2013 and was promoted to the role of Vice President, Strategy, Planning, and Organization Operations in July 2015.
Greenfield, who previously held the title of Director, Strategy and Planning, serves multiple functions in her role at NYRR, including strategy formulation, business opportunity assessment and planning, growth plan execution, and project implementation. She will continue her critical work on the organization’s strategy, goals, new community initiatives, and the next phase of business planning.

Prior to joining NYRR, Greenfield spent a number of years in management consulting for Katzenbach Partners, later acquired by Booz & Co. While there, she served clients in the U.S. and abroad in energy, pharmaceutical, technology, and consumer products sectors on a range of strategy projects, and also served the firm in internal leadership roles. Previously, she worked for the Boston Red Sox in business affairs, supporting a number of analytical and strategic evaluation efforts aimed at improving the fan experience and growing revenue streams through both digital and ballpark properties.

Greenfield earned her bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and her MBA from Harvard Business School. She currently resides in Brooklyn with her husband, Matthew, and their dog, Kaycee. Thanks to NYRR, she is trying to parlay her love for long walks and hiking into respectable running skills.

The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) was founded on February 22, 1958 by Browning Ross and nine other distance runners. Several months later, the New York Road Runners Club was founded by Ted Corbitt and John Sterner. Several NYRRC members held leadership positions in the RRCA, including Corbitt, Sterner, Joe Kleinerman, Aldo Scandurra, Kurt Steiner, Vince Chiapetta. Today, RRCA membership includes over 1000 running clubs.

Joe “Coach” Kleinerman was a founding member of the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) and New York Road Runners Club (NYRRC). A native New Yorker, Kleinerman worked for the US Post Office from 1936-1968 and served in the Pacific with the US Army during World War II.

As a teenager, he began running for De Witt Clinton High School and competed in track and cross-country for City College of New York. Kleinerman was an active runner from 1941-1958 and competed for the German American Athletic Club, St. Anselm Athletic Club, Glencoe Athletic Club, and the Millrose Athletic Association (Millrose AA). He placed 10th in the Boston Marathon in 1941 and 1942. After retiring from active running, Kleinerman became an assistant coach with the Millrose AA in 1958 and head coach in 1967.

Kleinerman served as vice president of Road Runners Club of America and vice president, secretary, and meet director of New York Road Runners Club. He was a key figure in women’s distance running and helped to organize the first women’s road race. He was named to the Road Runners Club Hall of Fame in 1972.

Kleinerman served as registrar of New York Road Runners until his death in 2003 at the age of 91. The NYRR Joe Kleinerman 10K is named after him and is held annually in January.
