T-shirts

This series consists of race t-shirts distributed to runners by NYRR and dates from 1973 to 2016. The series contains a partial run of New York City Marathon race t-shirts, with the earliest dating from 1973. Of particular note are the four 1976 New York City Marathon shirts, which include 2 shirts signed by Marathon winner Bill Rodgers and one shirt advertising the New York Academy of Sciences Marathon Conference held after the 1976 Marathon.

The series is arranged by race and therein chronologically, and it contains a partially complete run of weekly race t-shirts from 2004-2009 and 2015. Races represented in the collection include: the Fred Lebow Classic, Joe Kleinerman 10K, Midnight Run, Norwegian Festival, Japan Day, and Healthy Kidney 10K, as well as the 1984 and 1985 L'eggs Mini Marathon. Other t-shirts document NYRR’s Youth Programs, including the New York Road Runner Foundation, Mighty Milers, and Young Runners. The series also contains a small amount of NYRR staff t-shirts and polo shirts.

Series II also contains 4 quilts, crafted from race t-shirts. The largest quilt contains 20 panels using New York City Marathon t-shirts from 1973 and 1975-1989. Each panel has handwritten finish times for male and female winners. A second quilt was created using Joe Kleinerman 10K t-shirts from 1994 to 2001. The remaining quilts, dating from 1980-1993, utilize t-shirts from several races, including the Brooklyn Half Marathon, Trevira Twosome, Midnight Run, Women's Half Marathon, and America's Ekiden.
